Ozone therapy is the use of medical grade ozone, a highly reactive form of pure oxygen, to create a curative response in the body. It is used to optimize health and treat diseases by directly killing viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeast, and protozoa, and acting as an immune system modulator.
Ozone is a colorless gas composed of three oxygen atoms (O3). It is part of the upper atmosphere and is beneficial in that it protects the Earth from the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation, most of which it absorbs. Ozone is discussed as being harmful when it’s closer to the Earth’s surface, and mixed with pollutatns, which can cause it to act as an irritant to the lungs and can trigger asthma and other respiratory issues, which is why direct ozone is not administered through inhalation.
HOW IS OZONE ADMINISTERED MEDICALLY?
Although ozone is a gas, developments in technology mean it can be used in several forms and different ways, including:
- EBOO (extracorporeal blood ozonation and oxygenation) / RHP (recirculatory hemoperfusion), where a continuous flow of blood passes through a dialysis filter and is then ozonated; EBOO/RHP is the most advanced form of ozone therapy available in the world today
- IV drip, referred to as ‘major autohemotherapy’, where blood is withdrawn, mixed with ozone, added to an IV saline bag and then dripped back into the arm
- ‘Insufflation’, where ozone is blown into various orifices: ear, nose, vagina, rectum
- Injections, used for pain management (prolozone) and in dentistry for oral infections
- Minor autohemotherapy, where blood is withdrawn, mixed with ozone, and injected into the buttock via intramuscular injection
- Ozonated oil, applied directly to the skin
- Ozonated water, which is drunk
- Ozone sauna
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OZONE THERAPY?
Over the decades there have been many published studies examining how ozone may be beneficial to health by:
- Killing viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeast, parasites, and protozoa
- Improving the digestive system by re-establishing a healthy microbiome and improving circulation
- Increasing energy level by accelerating the Kreb’s cycle in the mitochondria
- Stimulating the immune system by enhancing cytokine activity
- Scavenging excess free radicals, stimulating rejuvenation and overall health
- Up-regulating antioxidant enzyme defense systems (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase)
- Enhancing cell breathing reinforcing the cell membrane for vibrant oxygenated skin
- Improving circulation by decreasing arterial plaque accumulation
- Normalizing hormone and enzyme production
- Exerting anti-inflammatory effects
- Inducing the release of growth factors that stimulate damaged joints and degenerative discs to regenerate.
WHAT CONDITIONS RESPOND TO OZONE THERAPY?
Since oxygen is so fundamental to why people get sick and how the body heals, ozone therapy has been found to be useful for many conditions including: heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, herpes, hepatitis, interstitial cystitis, diabetes, Lyme disease, chemical sensitivity, macular degeneration, intestinal disorders, and auto-immune disorders.
IS IT SAFE?
Ozone has been proven to be extremely safe, with a minor irritation to the respiratory system if inhaled.
Medical use of ozone should be considered carefully in people suffering with:
- Acute and chronic tendency to bleeding/hemophilia
- Pregnancy
- Photosensitivity or the taking of photo-active medication
- Active diverticulitis and active diverticulosis
- Low platelet count
- Possibly in overactive thyroid or thyrotoxicosis
- Individuals with a known deficiency of the glucose-6-phosphate enzyme
Ozone therapy is re-emerging in contemporary medicine, particularly through alternative providers, and is gaining renewed interest among patients.
HISTORY
In 1785, ozone was discovered by a Dutch chemist, Martinus van Marum.
In 1840, a German chemist synthesized ozone for the first time.
In 1857, the first ozone generator machine was invented.
In 1870, the first studies were published on the biological effects of ozone as a great disinfection agent in water. The discovery of its antimicrobial effects was a medical revolution at the time.
In 1893 in the Netherlands, the first industrial installation was performed for the disinfection and purification of water for human consumption. Subsequently, similar facilities were created in other European cities including Zurich and Florence.
In 1900, Nikola Tesla founded the “Tesla Ozone Co.” in the U.S. which manufactured ozone generators for medical use.
In 1913, several university professors and a hospital chief in the United States created the “American Association of Eastern Oxygen-Ozone Therapy”.
During the First World War, a chief surgeon of the German army medical services, extended the use of ozone for the treatment of infected wounds of soldiers.
In 1957, the first modern ozone generator was manufactured.
In 1961, ‘autohemotherapy’ is introduced as a form of administration of ozone via IV.
In 1987 in Barcelona, Spain the first hospital unit for ozone therapy was implemented.
In 1990, the Ministry of Health of Canada began using ozone to sterilize blood and by-products of blood prior to the rise of AIDS.
In 2010, Dr. Frank Shallenberger helped found the American Association of Ozone Therapy.
